Berlioz: The Damnation of Faust

Charles Dutoit, guest conductorWorld-renowned guest conductor Charles Dutoit returns to the Meyerson to lead the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in a powerful performance of Berlioz's The Damnation of Faust.

Goethe's poem Faust was used by many composers as inspiration, including Wagner, Schumann and Listz. Berlioz first read the French translation of the poem when he was a 23-year-old medical student and was instantly fascinated. He later composed eight pieces of music depicting eight scenes in the poem. Soon displeased with them and having a grander plan for a larger work, Berlioz withdrew them from publication and destroyed any copy he could find. The second attempt, which is the current form of Damnation, was much grander in scale, and the movements flow from one to another more smoothly in telling the story of Faust.

This work is not a symphony, nor is it an opera. It is considered a dramatic legend. It involves four vocal solists representing four main characters of the story: Marguerite/Gretchen (mezzo-soprano), Faust (tenor), Mephistopheles (baritone) and Brander (bass).

Don't miss this dramatic performance at the Meyerson.
