Stage West opens Rebecca Gilman's The Sweetest Swing in Baseball

After her career craters and her boyfriend dumps her, artist Dana Fielding finds that she really likes the peace and quiet of the psych ward. Unfortunately, her insurance will only allow her ten days--unless she is diagnosed with a severe psychosis. So with the help of her new friends Gary, a stalker, and Michael, an alcoholic, she schemes to fool her doctors by taking on the personality of troubled baseball star Darryl Strawberry. The deception yields results both expected—and unexpected. This funny play also scores some direct hits on the nature of fame and what Joni Mitchell called “the star-maker machinery.” The Sunday Express (London) said “Resonates with ideas about art, identity and being who you want to be.”

The Sweetest Swing in Baseball is directed by Dana Schultes, and stars Lisha Brock (who appeared in our production of Comic Potential) as Dana. David Fluitt and Nancy Sherrard, who were both in Major Barbara, appear in the dual roles of Roy/Gary and Rhonda/Dr. Gilbert respectively. And Stage West newcomers Joshua Doss and Laurel Whitsett will play Brian/Michael and Erica/Dr. Stanton.

The play previews May 8 and May 9, running Thursday through Saturday nights and Sunday matinees. We've also added two performances on Friday, May 30 and Saturday, May 31.
